Papal Homily at Beatification of Cardinal Newman

There was a joy for Christian Catholics, especially the English Catholics, on 19 September 2010; where one of their heroes was finally beatified: Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman.

At the beatification ceremony, His Holiness Benedict XVI gave a memorable homily in regard with how great works of love that Blessed Newman had achieved during his life on earth, both for God and for his brothers and sisters.

Blessed Newman in one of his sermons preached the importance of prayer, of what prayer is actually about.

“a habit of prayer, the practice of turning to God and the unseen world in every season, in every place, in every emergency – prayer, I say, has what may be called a natural effect in spiritualizing and elevating the soul. A man is no longer what he was before; gradually … he has imbibed a new set of ideas, and become imbued with fresh principles”
(Parochial and Plain Sermons, iv, 230-231)

Through prayer, we can talk personally to God, where “Heart speaks unto heart”.

Pope Benedict XVI also quoted Blessed Newman famous appeal of that Catholics should stand and strive for the proclamation of God’s kingdom in a loving but always in a line with the Church’s teachings:

“I want a laity, not arrogant, not rash in speech, not disputatious, but men who know their religion, who enter into it, who know just where they stand, who know what they hold and what they do not, who know their creed so well that they can give an account of it, who know so much of history that they can defend it”
(The Present Position of Catholics in England, ix, 390).

Blessed Newman’s appeal is necessary for current situation, where many Catholics are confused with they understanding on what actually the Mother Church teaches. Too much affected by personal emotions, they are getting confused on where they should stand and unconsciously start spreading the misleading loves which against what the Church always teaches.
